Seneca, Epistulae
(Starting September 5th, 2024)
Sold out!
Seneca’s Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium is a collection of 124 letters written to his friend Lucilius. These letters offer profound reflections on Stoic philosophy, ethics, and the art of living a virtuous life. Through personal advice and philosophical discourse, Seneca explores themes such as the nature of happiness, the importance of self-control, and the value of wisdom. His writing blends practical guidance with moral contemplation, making the Epistulae a timeless guide to Stoic thought and a key text for understanding Roman philosophy and the human condition.

Cicero, De natura deorum
Mon 8 pm CET - by invitation only
Cicero’s De Natura Deorum (On the Nature of the Gods) is a philosophical dialogue that explores the theological views of three major schools of thought in ancient Rome: Epicureanism, Stoicism, and Academic Skepticism. Written in 45 BCE, the work is structured as a conversation between representatives of these philosophies, each presenting arguments about the nature and existence of the gods. Cicero, acting as the skeptical moderator, leaves the questions open-ended, inviting readers to reflect on the complexities of religious belief.
Cicero’s De Natura Deorum is seldom read, but it is a key text for understanding ancient Roman religion and philosophy. The first book is surprisingly very funny, blending serious philosophical debate with witty critiques of religious beliefs, making it a unique and insightful exploration of theology in the Roman world.
